The 70-foot-long whale was discovered by a citizen who reported it to the Coast Guard. Authorities quickly responded and cordoned off the area around the carcass. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), blue whales are the largest animals on the planet. They can reach lengths of over 100 feet and weigh up to 200 tons. The cause of the whale’s death is currently unknown, but NOAA is investigating. It is possible that the whale was struck by a ship or became entangled in fishing gear. Due to the size and potential hazards posed by the carcass, the Eureka Police Department has closed the South Jetty Beach until further notice. Officials are encouraging the public to stay away from the area. “The carcass poses a safety hazard, and we want to ensure the well-being of our community,” said Police Chief Steve Watson. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation in this matter.” The City of Eureka and NOAA are working together to determine the best course of action for disposing of the whale’s remains. It is expected that the carcass will be towed out to sea and disposed of properly. In the meantime, residents and visitors are advised to avoid the South Jetty Beach and to follow any instructions provided by authorities.
