The $10 million project, spearheaded by the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, will focus on three primary aspects: Infrastructure Upgrades: * Extensive repairs to deteriorating sidewalks, paths, and roads * Improved accessibility with ramps and handrails for accessibility * Enhanced drainage systems to mitigate flooding Visitor Experience Improvements: * New interpretive signage providing detailed history and cultural context * Interactive exhibits and digital storytelling to engage visitors * Augmented reality experiences to bring the missions to life Historical Preservation: * Restoration and repair of mission buildings and grounds * Preservation of delicate artifacts and murals * Archaeological excavations to uncover and interpret the site’s past The project aims to both improve the visitor experience and ensure the long-term preservation of these iconic landmarks. The missions, including Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, Mission San Juan, Mission Espada, and Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), played a significant role in the history of Texas and continue to draw millions of visitors annually. The renovation will take place in phases over several years. Phase one, which includes infrastructure upgrades and accessibility improvements, is scheduled to begin in fall 2023. Subsequent phases will address visitor experience and historical preservation initiatives. “This project is an investment in our city’s rich cultural heritage and will ensure that future generations can appreciate the beauty and significance of the San Antonio Mission Trail,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “The Mission Trail is a national treasure,” added Anthony Graves, superintendent of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. “This renovation will not only enhance the visitor experience but also protect and preserve these historic landmarks for years to come.” The project is funded through a partnership between the National Park Service, the city of San Antonio, and private donations. Once complete, the renovated San Antonio Mission Trail will offer visitors a more immersive, educational, and accessible experience while preserving its historical authenticity for generations to come.
