The $150 million project, led by the nonprofit Westminster Street Historic District Association, aims to revitalize the Arcade while maintaining its unique character and historical significance. The renovation will encompass a complete restoration of the building’s exterior and interior, modernizing its infrastructure, and improving accessibility. “The Providence Arcade is a jewel in our city’s crown, and this renovation will restore it to its original splendor,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza. “It will not only preserve this cherished landmark but also contribute to the vibrancy and economic vitality of downtown Providence.” Built in 1828, the Providence Arcade is considered the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the United States. It has been a hub of commerce and a gathering place for generations of Providence residents and visitors. However, over the years, the building has experienced wear and tear, requiring significant upgrades to meet modern standards. The renovation project will include the restoration of the Arcade’s grand granite façade, the replacement of windows, and the complete overhaul of the interior. New lighting, HVAC systems, and elevators will be installed to improve safety and comfort. The building’s skylights, which have been dimmed over time, will be replaced to restore their original brilliance. “We want the Arcade to continue to be a vibrant part of Providence’s downtown for centuries to come,” said Meg Kerr, executive director of the Westminster Street Historic District Association. “This renovation will ensure that it remains an architectural treasure and a vital community asset.” The project is expected to take approximately three years to complete. During the renovation, the Arcade will remain open to the public with temporary closures as necessary. Businesses within the Arcade will continue to operate throughout the project, providing ongoing support to the local economy. The Providence Arcade renovation is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage and investing in its future. It is anticipated that the newly renovated Arcade will attract even more visitors and businesses, further enhancing Providence’s status as a thriving cultural and economic center.
