The initiative, announced by Mayor Brandon Scott, aims to install over 2,500 new EV charging stations across the city by 2026. These stations will be strategically placed in residential neighborhoods, public spaces, and along major transportation corridors. “This investment is a critical step towards reducing emissions and improving air quality in our city,” said Mayor Scott. “By making EV charging more accessible and convenient, we are encouraging Baltimoreans to embrace sustainable transportation options.” The expansion plan includes a variety of charging types, including Level 2 and DC fast chargers. Level 2 chargers typically provide up to 30 miles of range per hour of charging, while DC fast chargers can replenish an EV battery to 80% capacity in as little as 20 minutes. The charging network will be managed by a city-wide platform that will allow users to locate available stations and pay for charging sessions through a mobile app. The platform will also provide real-time information on station availability and charging costs. To support the initiative, Baltimore is partnering with utilities, private companies, and community organizations. The city has allocated $24 million in federal funds and is seeking additional funding sources to support the project. “We are committed to creating a sustainable and equitable transportation system for all Baltimoreans,” said Baltimore City Department of Transportation Director Steve Sharkey. “This expansion will make it easier for residents and visitors to transition to electric vehicles.” The expansion of Baltimore’s EV charging network is aligned with the city’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. By promoting electric vehicles and reducing transportation emissions, Baltimore is taking a proactive approach to mitigate climate change and improve the well-being of its residents.
