Located at Love Park near City Hall, the Robert Indiana sculpture has been a beloved landmark since its installation in 1976. However, on Wednesday, June 15, 2023, vandals defaced the sculpture with spray paint. The graffiti, which reads “LEAVE,” has sparked outrage and condemnation from city officials and residents alike. Mayor Jim Kenney called the vandalism “a cowardly act of disrespect” towards the city and its art. “This sculpture is a symbol of hope and joy for our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Kenney. “This vandalism is an assault on our collective heritage.” The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating the incident and searching for the individuals responsible. The city’s Department of Public Property has begun the process of cleaning and restoring the sculpture. “This vandalism will not destroy the spirit of Philadelphia,” said Art Commission President and CEO Amy Needleman. “Love will always prevail, even in the face of such senseless acts.” The Love Sculpture, with its bold red letters and simple design, has become an enduring image of Philadelphia. The sculpture has been featured in countless films, television shows, and photographs, and has been reproduced on t-shirts, postcards, and other merchandise. The city has a history of preserving and protecting its public art. In 2014, the vacant Municipal Services Building was renamed the Robert Indiana Building in honor of the artist. The Love Sculpture itself was designated a historic landmark in 1990. “This act of vandalism is not just an attack on a work of art,” said City Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson. “It is an attack on our city’s identity.” The public is encouraged to report any information related to the vandalism to the Philadelphia Police Department. The city is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
