South Bend’s Historic Studebaker Building Transformed into Affordable HousingSouth Bend’s Historic Studebaker Building Transformed into Affordable Housing Nestled in the heart of South Bend, Indiana, the iconic Studebaker Building is embarking on a new chapter as an affordable housing complex. Once the bustling headquarters of the renowned Studebaker automobile company, the historic landmark is being repurposed to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the community. The $28 million project, led by the South Bend Housing Authority and the Studebaker Building Redevelopers, LLC, will transform the vacant office space into 100 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, catering to low- and moderate-income families and individuals. The Studebaker Building, originally constructed in 1916, holds a significant place in South Bend’s industrial and architectural heritage. Its Beaux-Arts design and ornate facade have made it a beloved landmark within the community. By preserving and revitalizing this historic structure, the project honors the city’s past while creating a sustainable future. “This project is a testament to the creative solutions we can find when we collaborate to meet our community’s needs,” said South Bend Mayor James Mueller. “Not only will it provide much-needed affordable housing, but it will also preserve a cherished piece of our history.” The apartments will feature modern amenities such as energy-efficient appliances, spacious layouts, and accessible design features. Residents will also have access to on-site laundry facilities, a community room, and a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the city. The project is expected to create approximately 50 construction jobs and 15 permanent positions within the housing complex. It is part of a larger revitalization effort in the downtown area, which includes the renovation of the former Studebaker South Bend plant into a mixed-use development. “The transformation of the Studebaker Building into affordable housing is a win-win for our city,” said Studebaker Building Redevelopers, LLC President Anne Marie Whitehead. “It will provide much-needed housing options, while also preserving our architectural heritage and contributing to the vibrancy of our downtown.” The project is expected to be completed in 2024 and is one of several initiatives underway to address the need for affordable housing in South Bend. By providing safe and habitable living spaces for those who need it most, the revitalization of the Studebaker Building ensures that all residents have a place to call home in their beloved city.
