The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the area, predicting gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. The Fiesta’s safety protocols prohibit mass ascents and balloon flights when winds exceed 10 miles per hour. “The safety of our pilots, volunteers, and spectators is our top priority,” said Scott Appelman, Balloon Fiesta Executive Director. “We made the difficult decision to ground the Fiesta after consulting with meteorologists and aviation experts.” The Fiesta, which typically attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, features over 500 hot air balloons from around the world. The colorful and whimsical display is a beloved tradition in Albuquerque and a major economic driver for the city. While the mass ascents have been canceled, the Fiesta will still offer limited activities, including the Special Shape Rodeo, the Night Glow, and the Balloon Glow. These events allow visitors to admire the balloons up close, even though they won’t be flying. The organizers are monitoring the weather conditions and will reschedule the mass ascents as soon as it becomes safe. The Fiesta is scheduled to run through October 13th. Local businesses and vendors are disappointed but say they understand the need to prioritize safety. “It’s a bummer for sure, but we know that it’s for the best,” said Maria Sanchez, owner of a souvenir shop. “We’ll make up for it next year.” Spectators who have already purchased tickets are being offered refunds or the option to reschedule for the 2020 Fiesta.
