Atlanta Buzz: Mayor Bottoms Unveils New Affordable Housing InitiativeAtlanta Buzz: Mayor Bottoms Unveils New Affordable Housing Initiative Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has unveiled a comprehensive plan to address the city’s affordable housing crisis, dubbed “Atlanta’s Affordable Housing Initiative.” The initiative aims to create 5,000 new affordable housing units by 2026 and preserve 10,000 existing units. It includes a range of strategies, including: * Housing Choice Vouchers: Expanding the city’s Housing Choice Voucher program to provide rental assistance to low-income families. * Inclusionary Zoning: Requiring new residential developments to include a certain percentage of affordable units. * Tiny Home Initiative: Piloting a program to build and manage affordable tiny homes for homeless residents. * Rehabilitation and Preservation: Providing financial assistance to rehabilitate and preserve existing affordable housing units. * Community Engagement: Collaborating with community organizations, developers, and residents to identify and address affordable housing needs. Mayor Bottoms emphasized the urgency of addressing Atlanta’s housing crisis, which has displaced thousands of residents and contributed to rising homelessness. “Every Atlantan deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to live,” she said. “This initiative is a step towards ensuring that all of our residents have access to quality housing.” The Atlanta Housing Initiative will be funded through a combination of federal, state, and local resources, as well as private investment. The city has allocated $50 million from its general fund as a down payment on the initiative. Developers and housing advocates have welcomed the plan, but also called for additional funding and long-term commitment. “This initiative is a good start, but we need to ensure that it has the resources and the political will to make a real impact on our affordable housing crisis,” said David Mitchell, CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. The Atlanta City Council is expected to vote on the affordable housing plan in the coming weeks. If approved, the city will begin implementing the initiative immediately.
