Baton Rouge Residents Stunned as Alligator Crosses Major Highway at Rush HourBaton Rouge Residents Stunned as Alligator Crosses Major Highway at Rush Hour Baton Rouge, LA (March 20, 2023) – Commuters in Baton Rouge were left in disbelief on Monday morning as a large alligator was spotted crossing a major highway during rush hour. The incident occurred around 7:30 am on Interstate 10 near Bluebonnet Boulevard. According to witnesses, the alligator was approximately 10 feet long and appeared to be moving slowly across the eastbound lanes of the highway. Traffic came to a standstill as drivers slammed on their brakes to avoid hitting the reptile. Some motorists even abandoned their vehicles and fled on foot. “I’ve lived in Louisiana all my life, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” said eyewitness Sarah Jones. “I thought I was hallucinating.” The alligator eventually made its way to the median and climbed up a grassy embankment. Once it reached safety, it disappeared into the nearby woods. Authorities were notified about the incident and responded to the scene. However, by the time they arrived, the alligator had vanished. “This was a very unusual occurrence, especially given the location and time of day,” said Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson Chad Courville. “We encourage drivers to be alert and aware of their surroundings, particularly in areas known to be inhabited by alligators.” Residents of Baton Rouge expressed a mix of amusement and concern over the incident. Some joked about the possibility of “alligator delays” becoming a part of their daily commutes. Others voiced worries about the safety of motorists and the well-being of the alligator. “It’s amazing to witness the wildlife that we share our state with,” said Chris Evans, a local resident. “But I hope this doesn’t become a regular occurrence.” Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alligator’s appearance on the highway. They believe that the recent heavy rainfall in the area may have caused the reptile to leave its usual habitat and wander into human territory. Drivers in Baton Rouge are advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of alligators or other wildlife on the road.
