The grand staircase, adorned with ornate woodwork, has been refurbished, and the interior spaces have been modernized with new lighting, HVAC systems, and fire safety features. The restoration team paid meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the original plasterwork, moldings, and decorative elements were carefully preserved. “This renovation is a testament to Macon’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage,” said Josh Rogers, Executive Director of the Hay House Foundation. “The Hay House is not just a museum; it’s a living testament to the history and culture of our city.” The Hay House was built by Charles Hay, a prominent Macon merchant, and was considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the South. During the Civil War, it served as a headquarters for Union General William T. Sherman and became known as “Sherman’s Headquarters.” Today, the Hay House is a museum that tells the story of Macon and the Hay family through exhibits, tours, and educational programs. Visitors can explore the mansion’s 23 rooms, marvel at its stunning interiors, and learn about the lives of those who lived and worked here.
