City officials have issued a public appeal, citing concerns over public safety and the operational integrity of the electrical grid. “We understand that there may be a tradition or belief associated with this practice, but it is extremely dangerous and can lead to power outages and other risks,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. The placement of socks on power lines often serves as a marker for gang-related activity. However, it can also create a fire hazard by acting as a conductor of electricity. Additionally, entangled socks can obstruct the movement of power transmission lines, causing them to sag or snap. “Our utility crews work hard to keep the lights on for our community. Leaving socks on power lines can create an unnecessary hazard for them,” said City of Albuquerque Public Service Director Gerard Salazar. Albuquerque Electric Light (AEL), the city’s electric utility provider, has been actively removing socks from power lines throughout its service territory. Since 2022, AEL has collected over 3,000 socks. “We are asking the public to help us by not engaging in this practice,” said AEL CEO John Woods. “Every sock that is removed is a potential hazard averted.” City officials and law enforcement are encouraging residents to report any sightings of socks on power lines by calling 311. They also remind the public that tampering with power lines is a crime and can carry serious consequences. “Let’s work together to make our city safe and keep our power reliable,” said Mayor Keller. “Please, keep your socks off the power lines.”
