The blaze erupted shortly after 9:30 p.m. in a two-story brick building located on Gay Street, near the intersection with College Street. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke billowing from the structure as firefighters arrived on scene. “The fire had a significant head start on us,” said AFD Chief John Huff. “The building was fully engulfed by the time we got here.” Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and ladders to combat the flames. They worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings. The intense heat and smoke made the operation extremely challenging. As the fire raged, Auburn Police officers evacuated nearby businesses and residents to ensure their safety. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but authorities believe it may have started in the rear of the building. The historic structure, once home to a beloved antique shop, sustained extensive damage in the fire. The roof collapsed, and much of the interior was gutted. However, firefighters were able to salvage some items from the wreckage. “This is a devastating loss for our community,” said Auburn Mayor Ron Anders. “This building was a piece of our history, and we will do everything we can to support its restoration.” The Auburn Fire Department remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation and extinguish hotspots. The road closure on Gay Street has been lifted, but the building is still unstable and cordoned off. The community has rallied around the firefighters and the business owners affected by the fire. A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover the cost of repairs and recovery efforts. “Our firefighters demonstrated incredible courage and professionalism in facing this challenge,” said Chief Huff. “We are thankful for their unwavering commitment to protecting our community.”
