According to witnesses, the street collapsed suddenly around 11:00 AM, creating a gaping hole approximately 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep. A 2004 Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 67-year-old woman, was traveling on the street when the ground gave way beneath it. The vehicle plunged into the sinkhole, disappearing from view. Responders from the Kansas City Fire Department arrived on scene within minutes and immediately began searching for the victim. After several hours of excavation, they were able to locate the Jeep buried at the bottom of the sinkhole. Tragically, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not yet been released. The cause of the sinkhole is still under investigation. However, preliminary assessments indicate that it may have been caused by heavy rainfall in recent weeks, which weakened the soil beneath the street. The City of Kansas City has closed off the area surrounding the sinkhole and is working to make repairs. Traffic is being diverted around the affected area.
