The 40-foot inflatable fowl had taken residence in the river in Point State Park as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival. However, around 10:30 a.m., witnesses reported seeing the Ducky slowly losing air and eventually sinking beneath the water’s surface. Initial reports suggested a puncture or tear in the rubber skin, but festival organizers later confirmed that the cause was a malfunction in the internal air compressor. “It’s a sad day for Pittsburgh and everyone who loves the Giant Rubber Ducky,” said festival director Suzanne Martindale. “This has been a popular attraction for over a decade, and it’s very disappointing to see it end this way.” The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department responded to the incident and towed the deflated Ducky to shore. The inflatable is expected to undergo repairs, but the extent of the damage is still being assessed. The Giant Rubber Ducky has become a symbol of summertime fun in Pittsburgh. It was first introduced to the city in 2007 and has since drawn thousands of visitors each year. The Ducky has also made appearances at festivals and events around the world. “This is a huge disappointment for the festival and for the city,” said Mayor Bill Peduto. “But we’re hopeful that we can get the Ducky back up and floating again soon.” In the meantime, festival organizers are encouraging visitors to still enjoy Point State Park and other attractions at the Three Rivers Arts Festival. The festival runs through June 12th.
