A body was recovered from the Thames as a result of the search for a 60-year-old man who went missing after his rowing boat capsized.

The missing man, a member of Weybridge Rowing Club, entered the water near Sunbury Lock in Surrey on October 11 with five other people on board.

Although five adults were rescued, he remained the only person not accounted for.

Police said yesterday that a body had been recovered from the waterway near Sunbury Weird, but formal identification had not yet taken place.

Surrey Police said specialist officers were assisting the family of a missing man.

An investigation has been launched but the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Chief Inspector Andy Jenkins said: “We have been in close contact with the man’s family throughout this tragic incident to provide them with support and information at this incredibly difficult time.

“Our thoughts remain with them and we ask that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with their loss.”

Emergency services were called to Sunbury Lock in Sunbury-on-Thames at around 8.50am on Friday, October 11, Surrey Police said.

Weybridge Rowing Club confirmed it was one of their boats that “got into trouble following an incident on the water”.

A statement said: “The club is working closely with the emergency services, police, the Environment Agency and other agencies to assist in the search for the missing person and investigate the events that took place (October 11).”

Five other adults were rescued after the boat capsized, and three of them were taken to hospital for further evaluation.

South East Coast Ambulance said it sent crews to Sunbury Lock after receiving an alert of a “number of people in difficulty”.

“Ambulance crews, including our hazardous area response team, attended the scene along with police and fire services,” a spokesman for Surrey Live said.

“Five people were evacuated to safety, three of whom were taken to St. Peter for further research.”
