DELPHI — It’s the third emotional day of testimony in the Delphi murder trial.
Court began shortly after 9:00 a.m. Some of the audience was turned away due to limited seating.
The judges were asked a number of questions, including: Has anyone talked to them about this matter? All jurors answered no.
More than 40 crime scene photos were displayed on a large monitor in the courtroom. 90 minutes passed before the court adjourned.
The family, jurors and court gallery showed great emotion as photos of Abby Williams and Libby German were shown.
In the photos, both girls had large lacerations on their throats.
From the photos, it appears that Abby’s body was only a few feet away from Libby’s. Abby was shown fully clothed and Libby was shown naked.
Deputy Darren Giancola, a detective with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, was the first witness called for the state’s testimony.
Detective Giancola testified that he was off duty the day the girls disappeared.
After seeing on social media that the girl was missing, Giancola testified that he was the first detective to go to the sheriff’s office and then went to the trails near the Monon High Bridge. He said he began searching with other emergency services.
“I have been working in this industry for some time. Without knowing who they (Abby Williams and Libby German) were, what usually happened was that the minors disappeared and were at the movies or somewhere with their friends. But they usually showed up,” Detective Giancola said.
Giancola then testified that on February 14, 2017, he initiated search activities. He testified that he was the first law enforcement officer to arrive at the crime scene.
He said he was first called to the scene to view surveillance footage. He was then asked to go to Deer Creek because “We were told that members of the search party had found something, possibly bodies.”
Giancola testified that he saw multiple people in the Deer Creek area and said he saw a multi-colored shirt and shoe in the water. He said that when he first saw the bodies of Abby and Libby, “one was naked, the other was clothed.”
The second witness called to testify on Monday was Jason Page. Page is the investigator responsible for photographing the crime scene.
He referred to the topography of the crime scene and the significant amount of blood found on Libby German and where the girls were found.
The judges put their hands on their heads, fidgeted, sighed and blushed.
Richard Allen looked at the photos and took notes. He showed no visible emotion.
The judge took a long break to allow the jury to rest after a “tough morning.”
The court resumes proceedings at 1:00 p.m
