Coast Guard rescues man struck by propeller while trying to ground boat

CHARLESTON, S.C. – (Gray News) – A Coast Guard crew in South Carolina rescued a 33-year-old man Saturday who was struck by a boat propeller as he tried to run the vessel aground.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston officials said they received a call from Chatham County Marine Patrol officers just before 2 p.m., requesting air support to help bring the man to safety.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew helped take the man to Savannah Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Lt. Hunter Shortly of Savannah Air Station said the urgency of the mission was a good example of how the team worked together in a time of need.

“Each member knew their role and was able to do everything in their power to facilitate life-saving medical transport,” he said. “I am extremely proud and grateful for all the hard work done by Air Station Savannah.”

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.

Crews also worked to clear the ship.

The victim’s condition was not disclosed.
