Four people had to be rescued after they became stranded in the rising tide on the causeway.
HM Coastguard received a report of a car stranded at Holy Island Crossing in Northumberland at around 4pm BST on Monday.
Berwick RNLI and two coastguard teams found the car completely submerged in the water.
All four made it to a shelter and were taken to the mainland by the RNLI.
Kevin Knox, lifeboat operations manager at Berwick RNLI, said the team arrived at around 5.30pm.
“Four victims made it to the shelter and two coastguards went ashore to assess the situation,” Knox said.
“Our crew helped them all onto our boat and then transferred them to the Coast Guard team on the mainland using a rescue sled, which is used to transport victims to shore without having to wade.”
Berwick RNLI recently received its new Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, Penny J, and was used on a call for the first time.
“The crew was delighted with the way they performed,” Knox added.
