A curious calf found itself in big trouble after it climbed into a swimming pool at its owner’s home in Northfield, New Jersey, on Monday.
According to Tilton-Northfield Fire Chief Michael Sitar, shortly before 11 a.m. firefighters were called to 12 Bay Hill Road with an unusual request – to help rescue a calf from the swimming pool.
“She somehow gained access to the family pool this morning, bypassing necessary permits and ignoring seasonal inappropriate swimming,” police joked on Facebook.

Upon arrival, they found a calf named Charlie peeking out of an above-ground pool on a raised deck, Sitar said. It belongs to Kenneth Lowrey, the owner of the property.
Police said the cold and depth of the water posed a safety risk. Family members and rescuers had to strategize how to safely remove the 400-pound animal from the water.
Firefighters wrapped a harness around her calf and lifted her onto a pool ladder where she could reach the deck.

“After teamwork and careful planning, the cow was safely removed and is doing well,” firefighters said.
Police said that after the rescue, Charlie appeared scared and cold. Rescuers dried the calf, fed it apples and helped it warm up so it could return to the paddock.
“We are pleased to hear that Charlie was walking in his pasture when we left,” police said.
