On Friday, Amakhosi released a statement mourning the loss of former striker and defender John ‘Buick’ Makwazi, who has died aged 77.
The Johannesburg-born former professional footballer joined Chiefs from Moroka Swallows Big XV in 1975 and enjoyed a successful era for the club, winning twice in his first season.
On their official website the club wrote the following:
“Today, Kaizer Chiefs mourn the loss of a legendary figure following the passing of former defensive hero, John ‘Buick’ Makwazi, at the age of 77.
“The sleek, stylish defender, who glides seemingly effortlessly across the field, earned him the nickname ‘Buick’, a nod to his elegance in motion with the luxury American car.
“His style and sophistication on the pitch was matched by his impeccable fashion sense off it, and he remains one of the Glamor Boys icons in club folklore.
“Makwazi is survived by his five children, eleven grandchildren and his only sister.”
