On Friday morning, three men from the Misipawistik Cree Nation ventured into the northern basin of Lake Winnipeg for a moose hunting trip. However, they failed to return to their designated meeting point, raising concerns. As the hours passed, a wide-scale search and rescue operation was launched, involving various organizations and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. A helicopter was also deployed to assist in the search. Along the shoreline, items belonging to the missing boaters were discovered. The search intensified, and on Saturday, the body of a 31-year-old man was retrieved from the water by Easterville Search and Rescue. Sadly, the search for the remaining two men, aged 28 and 29, continues unabated. Their whereabouts remain unknown at this time. The incident has cast a shadow over the community, and authorities urge the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the victims’ families. The investigation into this tragic event is ongoing.
A 31-year-old man has died and two others are still missing after a group of boaters disappeared early Friday morning near Grand Rapids.
According to the RCMP, the three men were from the Misipawistik Cree Nation and traveled by boat to the northern basin of Lake Winnipeg to hunt moose. They were on their way back to the community but did not show up at their meeting point and did not interact with anyone.
The three men were reported missing around 7 a.m. Friday from Little Moose Lake.
Several search and rescue groups were deployed to the area along with the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. A helicopter was also deployed to help find the missing boaters.
Items belonging to the group were found along the coastline.
On Saturday, the body of one of the men was found in the water by Easterville Search and Rescue.
The search continues for the 28-year-old and 29-year-old men. They have not yet been found.
