Jaffna Kings ensured that home side Dambulla Sixers had no chance of winning the match early on by posting an impressive score of 218/5, thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s 88 in 53 balls. The win catapulted Jaffna back to the top of the table, with the Sixers still looking for a maiden win three games into the season.

Short score: JK 218/5 (20) (Nissanka 88(53), Avishka 57(30); Mustafizur 2/39(4)) beats DAS 188/8 (20) (Hendricks 80(50), Chapman 30(17); Asitha 2/25(4)) by 30 runs

Jaffna Kings started off well after being asked to bat first with Kusal Mendis playing the aggressor with a 12-ball cameo of 18 before falling victim to Mustafizur Rahman’s deceptive short delivery in the fourth over. Pathum Nissanka, who had been playing considerably less than run-a-ball until the stage, seized the opportunity to take the attacking role himself and powered his team to 52 along with Rilee Roussow at the end of the powerplay. Although a couple of tight overs thereafter resulted in the wicket of the latter, Nissanka kept the momentum going to take the score to 89/2 after 11 overs. However, with spin now operating from both ends, both he and Avishka Fernando switched gears sensationally to smash 53 runs from the next four overs to set themselves up for the Power Blast. Although the two-over phase culminated with Nuwan Thushara dismissing Nissanka, the stage remained ripe for the death overs to come. Quick cameos from Charith Asalanka (6-ball 13) and Azmatullah Omarzai (6-ball unbeaten 19), combined with Avishka’s brutal 32-run takedown of Thushara in the penultimate over, took Jaffna to a mammoth 218/5 at the close of 20.

In response, Reeza Hendricks struck straight away with three boundaries from the opening over. Kusal Perera kept the spirit up with a seven-ball cameo for 16 runs from the other end and even Asitha Fernando threatened to put the brakes on by scalping him and Danushka Gunathilaka in successive overs, a sixth-over assault by Nuwanidu Fernando leaving the score at a daunting 67/2 at the end of the powerplay. However, when Tabraiz Shamsi ended his brief stay, a few quiet overs followed, raising the asking price to almost 12 by mid-innings. Chapman tried to take matters into his own hands with a flurry of boundaries but couldn’t stay long enough to make a real dent in the chase. To make matters worse, none of the batters who followed could get their power game going. Azmatullah’s sharp catch off his own bowling, which beat Reeza in the 18th over, virtually decided the match as Jaffna won by 30 runs.
