A frantic search was underway on Sunday morning for a 23-year-old man after a boat carrying four young men capsized near Newcastle in New South Wales on Saturday evening.

One person has died and two others have been injured after a crash in the Hunter region of New South Wales. Emergency services were called to Salt Ash, north of Newcastle, at around 11pm last night after the car collided with a tree. A teenage boy reportedly died on the way to hospital. The 17-year-old driver was taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

At around 7.50pm emergency services were called to Channel Street after reports of several people in the water after a small boat capsized.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that three young men, two aged 23 and one aged 20, had been pulled from the water near Dobinson Drive.

However, a 23-year-old is still missing.

It is believed that the boat struck an object and the four passengers were thrown into the icy water, after which the boat capsized.

Video filmed from another boat showed a small craft arriving at the scene to rescue at least one of the men who was treading water.

A man said, “Don’t worry about the boat, just get these boys in.”

“We’re coming, we’re coming,” said one of the rescuers, before spotting someone else lying in the water further away.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the three men at the scene, while one of the 23-year-olds was taken to hospital with hypothermia.

The boat’s captain, also 23 years old, was taken to hospital for a mandatory examination.
