Ford Raises Concerns of Job Losses at LCBOFord Raises Concerns of Job Losses at LCBO Ontario Premier Doug Ford has expressed concerns that the province’s liquor control system, the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), could lead to job losses in the retail sector. In a recent interview with CTV News London, Ford said he was “very concerned” about the impact of LCBO privatization on private liquor stores. “I support the LCBO. I think they do a great job,” Ford said. “But we have to make sure we don’t put private sector jobs at risk.” Ford’s comments come as the province considers a plan to privatize some LCBO stores. The Progressive Conservative government has proposed allowing private retailers to sell beer and wine, similar to the system in Quebec and Alberta. However, critics of the plan argue that it would lead to job losses at LCBO stores, which employ approximately 7,500 people. The LCBO has also said that privatization could lead to higher liquor prices and less selection. The government has not yet announced a decision on whether to proceed with the privatization plan. The Retail Council of Canada, which represents the retail industry, has supported the government’s proposal. “We believe that the privatization of beer and wine sales in Ontario will create jobs and increase consumer choice,” said David Wilkes, the council’s senior vice president. However, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), which represents LCBO employees, has strongly opposed the plan. “Privatization will destroy jobs, hurt local businesses, and lead to higher prices for consumers,” said Wayne Hanley, the union’s president. The UFCW has launched a campaign to save LCBO jobs, which includes a petition and social media campaign.
