The Buccaneers drew 2-2 with English Championship side Plymouth Argyle in their opening match of the preseason tour to Spain, followed by a 2-0 win over Sevilla. After a convincing win over the La Liga side, Pirates were expected to beat Granada, who play in the Segunda Division after being relegated from La Liga last season. However, the Spanish team proved to be a strong opponent. Granada got off to a quick start and came close to taking the lead in the 11th minute, but Sipho Chaine saved Miquel’s shot and turned it into a corner. Six minutes later Sergio Ramos was through on goal, but Chaine quickly emerged from his penalty area to clear the ball. The Spanish side would be punished by the Buccaneers in the 20th minute when Patrick Maswanganyi sent Gilberto through and the Bucs’ new signing Martinez beat him with a low shot to put the Pirates ahead. But it took just two minutes for Granada to equalise through Weissman, who tapped home a loose ball after a mistake from Sandile Mthethwa at the back. Pirates were forced to make a substitution after Evidence Makgopa failed to recover from an injury, with the Bafana Bafana striker being replaced by Tshegofatso Mabasa. Jozwiak almost put Granada ahead after half an hour, but Chaine made sure the score was still 1-1 at half-time. The first few minutes of the second half were difficult, with both teams making a number of silly fouls. Monnapule Saleng tried just outside the penalty area after an hour of play, but the goalkeeper was in a good position to save the ball. Pirates coach Jose Riveiro made 10 changes in the 61st minute in which he wanted to give as many players as possible a chance in the Bucs’ third match on the Spanish tour. Young goalkeeper Siyabonga Dladla, who recently gained promotion to the senior team, was one of those given the chance to impress, coming on for Chaine. However, the changes had no effect on the outcome of the match and in the end the teams had to settle for a draw. On Friday, the Pirates will play the last match of their Spanish tour against Al-Sadd.
