Youth Gain Valuable Experience Through Paid InternshipsYouth Gain Valuable Experience Through Paid Internships (July 22, 2024) To empower job seekers and individuals seeking new skills, Powys County Council offered paid internship opportunities. Kyle, a Newtown native, was one of the successful candidates joining the Waste Awareness and Enforcement team. Kyle’s previous experience includes temporary work on recycling trucks and backpacking in New Zealand. Back home, Kyle embraced his role as Waste Awareness Assistant, engaging with the community to promote recycling. Despite his marathon-running passion, he tirelessly walked miles to deliver recycling messages. “It’s remarkable to see individuals in Powys earn while learning,” said Councilor Jake Berriman. “This opportunity not only develops their skills but also allows them to contribute to our services.” Councilor Jackie Charlton emphasized the importance of retaining talent in Powys. “These internships give job seekers a chance to stay in the county while gaining valuable experience,” she said. The internships were funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

Job seekers and people looking to learn new skills were recently invited to apply for a number of paid internship positions with the municipality.
One of the successful candidates, Kyle, from Newtown, has joined the council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement team for the six-month opportunity. Kyle previously worked on the recycling trucks as a temporary crew member during the Covid pandemic before heading overseas on a backpacking adventure around New Zealand.
Now that he’s back home and looking to kick-start his career, Kyle has been getting stuck into his new role as Waste Awareness Assistant. He’s been out in the community knocking on doors, handing out leaflets and putting stickers on bins, encouraging people to recycle more. In his spare time, Kyle runs marathons, so he’s been walking miles every day to bring recycling messages to the people of Powys.
Councillor Jake Berriman, Powys County Council Executive Member responsible for HR, said: “It is really positive to see people in Powys being given the opportunity to earn money while learning and gaining skills in the workplace by helping to deliver frontline services for the council.
“We had a huge interest in the paid internship opportunities and have recruited nine excellent individuals for the roles. We hope that the experience will enable them to further develop their careers and perhaps even apply for full-time positions with the council in the future.”
Councillor Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, added: “I’m really pleased to see that we’re helping jobseekers stay in Powys by offering these apprenticeship opportunities alongside experienced professionals. Having an extra pair of hands in our busy Waste Awareness and Enforcement team is great, especially as we focus our efforts on meeting the Welsh Government’s statutory 70% recycling target.”
Powys County Council has received funding from the Shared Prosperity Fund (UK Government) to provide these placements.
