Mumbai (PTI): A 50-year-old woman was found tied to a tree with an iron chain in a forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. A police official said on Monday that a copy of her US passport and other documents, including an Aadhaar card with an address in Tamil Nadu, were recovered from her.
A shepherd heard her cries on Saturday night in the village of Sonurli, about 450 kilometres away, and alerted police after finding her chained and in distress, the official said.
“The woman was rushed to a hospital in Sawantwadi (in the Konkan region of the state) and then to Oros in Sindhudurg. Considering her mental and health condition, she was shifted to Goa Medical College for further treatment. She is out of danger. Doctors treating her said she is suffering from psychiatric problems. We have found medical prescriptions in her possession,” the official informed.
“We found her Aadhaar card with an address in Tamil Nadu and a photocopy of her passport in the United States of America. She has been identified as Lalita Kayi. Her visa has expired. We are getting all these documents verified to establish her nationality. The police are also in touch with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office,” he said.
According to initial information received by the police, the woman has been living in India for 10 years, the official said.
“The woman is not in a condition to give a statement. The woman is weak as she has not eaten for a few days and also because the area has been receiving heavy rains. We do not know how long she was tied to that tree. We suspect that her husband, who hails from Tamil Nadu, tied her up there and fled,” he said.
The official said police teams have left for Tamil Nadu, Goa and some other places to trace her family members as part of the investigation.
