San Diego: Shark Attack Closes La Jolla CoveSan Diego: Shark Attack Closes La Jolla Cove La Jolla Cove, a popular swimming and snorkeling destination in San Diego, California, was closed to the public on Thursday, October 6th, 2023, following a shark attack. The attack occurred around 10:30 AM when a woman in her early 20s was swimming in the cove. According to witnesses, the woman was about 100 yards from shore when she was attacked by a seven-foot great white shark. Bystanders witnessed the attack and immediately called 911. Lifeguards quickly arrived on scene and rescued the woman from the water. She was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries to her leg. “It was absolutely terrifying,” said one witness. “We saw the shark circling the woman, and it was just a matter of seconds before it attacked.” The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed that the woman suffered a 12-inch laceration to her right thigh. Her condition is currently stable. In response to the attack, La Jolla Cove has been closed indefinitely. The city’s lifeguards are patrolling the area and monitoring the water for any signs of sharks. “The safety of our community is our top priority,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure that our beaches are safe for swimmers and beachgoers.” The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the attack and trying to determine if the shark is still in the area. They are advising people to avoid swimming in the cove until the investigation is complete. This is the first shark attack in La Jolla Cove in over 20 years. The last attack occurred in 2001 when a 14-year-old boy was bitten by a shark.
