Baton Rouge Buzz: Mayor Unveils Electrified City Bus PlanBaton Rouge Buzz: Mayor Unveils Electrified City Bus Plan Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome has unveiled an ambitious plan to electrify the city’s public transit system, marking a significant step towards reducing emissions and improving air quality. The plan calls for the gradual replacement of 30 diesel-powered city buses with zero-emission electric vehicles over the next five years. The electric buses will be deployed on high-frequency routes throughout the city, including major thoroughfares and areas with dense populations. “This is a bold move for Baton Rouge, and it is one that will have a lasting impact on our city,” said Mayor Broome. “Electrifying our bus fleet will significantly reduce our carbon footprint, create jobs, and improve the health of our residents.” The mayor’s plan is supported by a $20 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The city will also contribute $5 million towards the project, bringing the total investment to $25 million. The electric buses are expected to save the city money in the long run. The cost of electricity is significantly lower than diesel fuel, and electric buses require less maintenance. The city estimates that it will save approximately $250,000 per year in operating costs. In addition to the environmental and financial benefits, the electric buses will also improve the rider experience. Electric buses are quieter and smoother than diesel buses, and they produce zero emissions inside the cabin. “We want to make public transportation a more attractive option for Baton Rouge residents,” said CATS CEO Brian Creed. “Electric buses will provide a more comfortable and environmentally friendly ride for our passengers.” The city expects to begin deploying the first electric buses in early 2024. The full electrification of the fleet is expected to be completed by 2028. The Baton Rouge Buzz plan has been praised by environmental advocates and transportation experts. “This is a major step forward for clean air and public transportation in Baton Rouge,” said Michelle Caldwell, executive director of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network. “Electric buses will reduce air pollution, improve the health of our communities, and create jobs.” Transportation expert Dr. Robert Romano said, “Electrifying city buses is one of the most effective ways to reduce emissions in our cities. Baton Rouge is setting a great example for other cities across the country.” The Baton Rouge Buzz plan is a significant step towards making the city a more sustainable and livable place. The electrification of the city bus fleet will improve air quality, reduce emissions, save money, and improve the rider experience.
