Philadelphia Sees Surge in Dog Adoptions Amidst PandemicPhiladelphia Sees Surge in Dog Adoptions Amidst Pandemic As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to isolate people in their homes, a heartwarming trend has emerged in Philadelphia: a surge in dog adoptions. According to the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA), adoptions of dogs at its two Philadelphia locations have skyrocketed since the onset of the pandemic. In the first four months of 2020, PSPCA adopted out 1,321 dogs, a 30% increase over the same period last year. “We’ve seen an overwhelming outpouring of people looking to adopt dogs,” said Dan Howe, executive director of PSPCA. “People are home more and looking for companionship and routine.” Experts believe the pandemic has created a perfect storm for dog adoption. With people spending more time indoors, they have more time to care for a pet. Additionally, the economic downturn has led to a reduction in pet surrender rates, as owners are less likely to give up their beloved animals. “Dogs are wonderful stress relievers,” Howe said. “They provide unconditional love and support, which are things we all need right now.” The surge in adoptions has not been limited to Philadelphia. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that animal shelters across the country have seen a similar increase in pet adoptions and fostering. “People are realizing that animals can make a big difference in their lives,” said ASPCA President Matt Bershadker. “They provide companionship, laughter, and unconditional love.” For those considering adopting a dog, PSPCA recommends doing research to find the right breed for their lifestyle. It is also important to be prepared for the time, effort, and financial commitment involved in pet ownership. “Adopting a dog is a big responsibility, but it can be one of the most rewarding experiences,” Howe said. “To see the joy a dog brings to a family is truly priceless.”
