New Haven City Council Approves Plan for Affordable Housing ComplexNew Haven City Council Approves Plan for Affordable Housing Complex New Haven, CT – The New Haven City Council has unanimously approved a plan to construct an affordable housing complex on the city’s East Side, a long-awaited project that aims to address the pressing need for low-income housing in the community. The proposed complex, known as the “East Haven Commons,” will be located at 410 Munson Street and will consist of 100 units of affordable housing, ranging from one- to three-bedrooms. The complex will be built on vacant land that has been owned by the city for several years. Mayor Justin Elicker hailed the approval as a “major victory for our city.” “This project represents our commitment to providing safe, affordable housing for all New Haven residents,” Elicker said. “With the East Haven Commons, we are taking a significant step towards addressing the housing crisis and ensuring that our city remains a place where everyone has a chance to succeed.” According to city officials, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New Haven is over $1,500 per month, which is unaffordable for many low-income families and individuals. The East Haven Commons will provide much-needed relief by offering units at significantly lower rates. The project is being funded through a combination of federal, state, and city resources. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has provided $10 million in funding, while the state of Connecticut has allocated $5 million. The City of New Haven will contribute the remaining $15 million. Construction on the East Haven Commons is expected to begin in the spring of 2023 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. The complex will include amenities such as a community room, a fitness center, and a playground. Residents of the East Haven Commons will have access to a variety of support services, including job training, financial literacy classes, and childcare. The complex will also be located near public transportation, schools, and grocery stores. “This project is a testament to the power of partnership and collaboration,” said Alderman Ernie Dumas, who represents the East Side. “By working together, we have been able to create a solution that will make a real difference in the lives of our residents.”
