San Diego Swelters as Heat Wave Scorches Southern CaliforniaSan Diego Swelters as Heat Wave Scorches Southern California Unprecedented heat has gripped San Diego and the surrounding region, as a relentless heat wave blankets Southern California. Temperatures have soared to alarming levels, setting new records and posing a serious threat to residents. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for San Diego, Los Angeles, and much of the state. The mercury in San Diego climbed to a record high of 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius) on Tuesday, breaking the previous record set in 1960. “This is the hottest it’s been in San Diego in 130 years,” said meteorologist Alex Tardy. “The heat index, which factors in humidity, made it feel like it was 120 degrees.” The extreme heat has put a strain on San Diego’s infrastructure. Power outages have affected thousands of homes and businesses, and utility companies are working feverishly to restore service. Air conditioning units are running non-stop, putting a heavy load on the electrical grid. The heat has also taken a toll on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions. Heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration are on the rise. “We urge everyone to take precautions during this dangerous heat wave,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “Stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, and seek shade whenever possible.” Cooling centers have been opened throughout San Diego County to provide refuge from the heat. Residents are encouraged to visit these centers if they feel overheated or need a place to cool down. The heat wave is expected to intensify in the coming days, with temperatures reaching their peak on Wednesday and Thursday. Relief is not expected until Friday, when a cooling trend is forecast to move into the region. Until then, residents are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
