This ambitious project aims to bridge the digital divide and empower residents with equitable access to the internet. Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his enthusiasm, stating that “free Wi-Fi in our parks is a game-changer.” He emphasized the importance of technology in today’s society and the need to ensure that all Baltimoreans have the opportunity to succeed in a digital world. The Wi-Fi network, spanning over 300 parks across the city, will provide residents and visitors with high-speed internet access. This will facilitate educational pursuits, job searches, online banking, and community engagement. The initiative is a collaboration between the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, the Baltimore City Office of Information Technology, and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. “Access to free Wi-Fi in public parks eliminates barriers to digital literacy and economic empowerment,” said Jason Mitchell, Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks. “We are committed to creating inclusive public spaces where everyone can thrive.” The Wi-Fi network will be easily accessible, with login instructions available through QR codes posted in parks. It will also support multiple devices, allowing families and individuals to connect simultaneously. The launch of free Wi-Fi in public parks aligns with Baltimore’s broader digital equity initiatives. The city has previously invested in broadband expansion and community-based technology programs to address digital disparities. By providing free and accessible internet in public parks, Baltimore is fostering a more equitable, connected, and digitally inclusive city. This initiative empowers residents to fully participate in the digital age, regardless of socioeconomic status or location.
