Baltimore Buzz: City Loosens Mask Mandate Amidst Declining COVID CasesBaltimore Buzz: City Loosens Mask Mandate Amidst Declining COVID Cases Baltimore, Maryland – With the number of COVID-19 cases steadily declining, the City of Baltimore has announced the loosening of its mask mandate. Effective immediately, masks will no longer be required in most indoor settings, including businesses, offices, and entertainment venues. The decision comes as the city reports a significant decrease in cases and hospitalizations. As of Tuesday, the daily average of new COVID-19 cases was 42, down from a peak of over 1,000 in January. Similarly, hospitalizations have fallen to an average of 15 per day from a high of over 600 in November. Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa cited the city’s high vaccination rate as a key factor in the easing of the mask mandate. Over 90% of Baltimore City residents are fully vaccinated, and more than 60% have received booster doses. “Our data shows that vaccinations have been extremely effective in preventing serious illness and death from COVID-19,” said Dr. Dzirasa. “With our vaccination rates at historic highs, we can now safely relax our mask mandate.” The loosening of the mask mandate does not apply to healthcare settings, such as hospitals and clinics, or public transportation. Masks will still be required in these areas to protect the health of healthcare workers and vulnerable populations. Mayor Brandon Scott urged residents to continue exercising caution, even as the mask mandate is lifted. “We must remain vigilant and practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing and social distancing when necessary,” said Mayor Scott. The decision to loosen the mask mandate has been met with mixed reactions. Some businesses and residents welcome the change, while others expressed concern about the potential for an increase in cases. “This is a sensible move,” said Joe Smith, owner of a local restaurant. “Our customers are exhausted from wearing masks, and I believe it will increase business.” However, Sarah Jones, a healthcare professional, said she is worried about the potential for a resurgence in cases. “I’m not convinced that we are out of the woods yet,” she said. “I would have preferred to wait a little longer before lifting the mask mandate.” The city will continue to monitor COVID-19 data closely and may reinstate the mask mandate if necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow any updates from the Baltimore City Health Department.
