Adopting a pet has become a way for them to make a meaningful contribution to their community while also bringing happiness into their own lives. “I’ve always wanted a dog, but the timing never seemed right,” said Allison Baker, who recently adopted a golden retriever named Max. “With everything going on in the world, I realized that now was the perfect time. Max has brought so much joy to my life, and I’m so grateful to have him.” As the pandemic continues, it remains unclear whether the surge in pet adoption will be sustained. However, animal welfare organizations hope that the increased awareness of the importance of companionship will lead to a long-term shift in attitudes towards pet ownership. “We hope that people will continue to recognize the benefits of having a pet in their lives,” said Martin. “Even when the pandemic is over, pets will still need our love and support.”
