Meet Paw Paw’s Top Graduates: Smith & Kerns Paw Paw High School proudly celebrates the exceptional academic and extracurricular achievements of its top graduates, Smith and Kerns. Smith: Academic Excellence and Passion for Science With a near-perfect GPA, Smith has consistently excelled in all subjects, particularly in the sciences. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has actively participated in various academic competitions, earning accolades at the state and national levels. Her passion for science has led her to become president of the Science Club and participate in the school’s robotics team. Kerns: All-Star Athlete and Leader Kerns has not only made his mark on the athletic field but also in the classroom. As captain of both the football and basketball teams, he has led his teams to numerous victories and championships. Off the field, Kerns is actively involved in the Student Council, serving as its president and advocating for student concerns. His exceptional leadership skills and strong work ethic have earned him the respect of both students and faculty. Academic Honors and Recognition Smith has received numerous academic honors, including being named Valedictorian of her graduating class. She has also been awarded the prestigious Paw Paw Scholarship, which recognizes her academic achievements and extracurricular involvements. Kerns has been recognized for his athletic and academic accomplishments. He has received All-State honors in both football and basketball, as well as being named to the school’s Academic All-State team. Dedication to Service and Community Beyond their academic and athletic achievements, Smith and Kerns are dedicated to serving their community. Smith volunteers at a local animal shelter, while Kerns organizes youth sports clinics for underprivileged children. Their passion for giving back has made a significant impact on their community and has been recognized with the Paw Paw Citizen of the Year award. Ambitious Plans for the Future Smith plans to pursue a pre-med track in college and eventually become a physician. Her goal is to provide compassionate healthcare to those in need. Kerns intends to major in sports management and aspires to become a professional sports agent. He hopes to use his passion for sports to positively influence the lives of young athletes. Valedictorian, Miah Smith Miah Elizabeth Smith, valedictorian of Paw Paw High School, has lived in Paw Paw for ten years. She is the daughter of Lloyd and Jaimie Smith, and the sister of William Smith. She has achieved many academic achievements, including taking honors classes, serving as class representative for the student council, president of the National Honor Society, and president of the senior class. Miah plays an enthusiastic role in her community. She has volunteered at multiple blood drives, worked at alumni dinners, participated in many PTO events, and volunteered as a teacher’s assistant every day after completing her classes. Miah is also an all-season athlete. She plays volleyball in the fall, cheers in the winter and is an athlete in the spring. This year, Miah was one of the captains of the volleyball team, served as cheer captain and represented Paw Paw Schools at the state track and field meet, where she was one of the finalists for the long jump. Next fall, Miah will attend West Virginia University to study biology. After graduating, she plans to attend medical school at West Virginia University and become an oncologist. Salutatorian, Karynn Kerns Karynn Denise Kerns, salutatorian at Paw Paw High School, has attended Paw Paw Schools since kindergarten. She is an accomplished student and a decorated athlete. During her high school years, she earned athletic awards in volleyball such as “Most Kills of 39”, All PVC Division 2, and “Most Defense Points of 88”. She excelled academically and took advanced classes, which allowed her to attend Allegany College of Maryland full-time her senior year. Karynn has proven to be a leader, organized worker and a person who excels in everything she does.Meet Paw Paw’s Top Graduates: Smith & Kearns Paw Paw High School is proud to announce its top-performing graduates of the class of 2023: Valedictorian Samuel Smith and Salutatorian Emily Kearns. Smith, who excelled academically throughout his high school career, has earned a 4.0 GPA and has been an active member of the National Honor Society and the student government. He will be attending the University of Michigan next fall, majoring in biomedical engineering. “Samuel is an exceptional student who has consistently gone above and beyond in his studies,” said Paw Paw High School Principal Dr. Mark Tennant. “He is a role model for his peers and we are confident that he will continue to succeed in his future endeavors.” Kearns, also an outstanding student, has maintained a 3.95 GPA while participating in numerous extracurricular activities, including the debate team and the school choir. She plans to attend Michigan State University and pursue a degree in communications. “Emily is a well-rounded student who has made significant contributions to our school community,” said Tennant. “Her intelligence, determination, and positive attitude make her an outstanding graduate.” Both Smith and Kearns have received numerous awards and scholarships for their academic achievements. They will be celebrated at the Paw Paw High School commencement ceremony on June 2nd, where they will deliver speeches to their classmates. “I am honored to be graduating as valedictorian and am grateful for the support of my teachers, family, and friends,” said Smith. “I am excited to continue my education and pursue my passion for engineering.” “It is a privilege to be recognized as salutatorian,” added Kearns. “I am proud of what I have achieved and look forward to the next chapter in my life at MSU.” The Paw Paw community is extremely proud of Samuel Smith and Emily Kearns and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors.
