The sinkhole, which measures approximately 30 feet wide and 15 feet deep, emerged suddenly on Wednesday morning on Congress Street, just steps from the entrance to City Hall. Authorities were alerted to the incident at around 8:30 AM after a passerby noticed the ground giving way. Within minutes, the sinkhole rapidly expanded, causing the sidewalk and a portion of the street to collapse. City Hall was immediately evacuated as a precautionary measure, with all employees and visitors being safely ushered to a nearby building. Nearby businesses and residences were also evacuated, and the area around the sinkhole has been cordoned off to prevent further accidents. “The safety of our residents and employees is our top priority,” said Mayor Marty Walsh in a statement. “We are working closely with emergency responders to ensure everyone is safe and to determine the cause of this sinkhole.” The Boston Fire Department, Police Department, and Public Works Department are currently on scene, along with engineers and geologists from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). They are working to stabilize the area and investigate the cause of the collapse. “At this time, we don’t know exactly what caused the sinkhole,” said MassDOT Commissioner Ginny Foxx. “We are conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as they become available.” City Hall has been closed indefinitely pending a full safety assessment. All essential city services, including police, fire, and emergency response, are continuing to operate out of alternate locations. The appearance of the sinkhole has shocked the city and raised concerns about the condition of Boston’s aging infrastructure. City officials have vowed to address any underlying issues that may have contributed to the collapse.
