City of Wheeling Helps Residents Beat the Heat (Free) at City Pools Wheeling, WV – As temperatures soar this summer, the City of Wheeling is offering free admission to its city pools to provide relief to residents from the oppressive heat. Starting today, all city pools will be open to the public free of charge. WHEELING+–+The+city+of+Wheeling+is+giving+everyone+a+chance+to+beat+this+week’s+heat+wave+in+celebration+of+West+Virginia+Day+with+free+admission+to+the+four+city-operated+pools+today.
“This+coming+Thursday,+due+to+the+weeklong+heat+wave,+we+will+have+a+free+pool+day+at+all+four+city+pools+on+Thursday,”+Wheeling+City+Manager+Robert+Herron+said+this+week.+
“The+reason+to+do+it+on+Thursday+is+because+it+is+West+Virginia+Day,+but+we+also+need+to+have+enough+lifeguards+to+handle+the+extra+volume.”
Pools+operated+by+the+City+of+Wheeling+include+the+36th+Street+Pool+in+South+Wheeling,+Garden+Park+Pool+in+Warwood,+Bridge+Park+Pool+on+Wheeling+Island+and+Grandview+Pool+on+Wheeling+Heights.
The+pool+is+open+from+12pm+to+6pm+and+free+popsicles+are+available+for+poolside+sun+worshipers,+while+supplies+last.
The+city+of+Wheeling+traditionally+offers+free+pool+admission+on+special+occasions,+and+officials+agreed+this+week’s+West+Virginia+Day+celebration+was+the+perfect+time+to+make+a+splash+as+temperatures+dip+into+the+low+teens+all+week+long.+90s+have+risen+before+the+end+of+spring.++,+early+summer+heat+wave+in+the+Ohio+Valley.
Herron+noted+this+week+that+if+staff+allows,+additional+days+of+free+admission+may+be+announced+by+the+city.
“Depending+on+the+lifeguards’+planning,+we+may+be+able+to+extend+that+a+few+more+days+if+we+get+through+this+heat+wave,”+he+said.
The+renovation+of+a+number+of+city+playgrounds+is+also+expected+to+be+completed+this+week.++Old+structures+were+removed+and+new+play+equipment+for+young+children+–+along+with+new+rubber+safety+surfaces+–+was+installed+at+each+of+the+playgrounds,+including+the+36th+Street+Playground+adjacent+to+the+pool+in+South+Wheeling,+the+Elm+Terrace+Playground+in+Elm+Grove+and+the+playground+in+Clator.
Earlier+this+year,+the+Wheeling+City+Council+passed+an+ordinance+restraining+$245,850+in+expenditures+at+Savage+Construction+Co.++of+Wheeling+were+approved+for+playground+improvements.++The+city+is+using+a+portion+of+its+American+Rescue+Plan+Act+allocation+to+complete+these+upgrades.
“All+three+playgrounds+that+the+City+Council+approved+a+few+weeks+ago+–+36th+Street,+Elm+Terrace+and+Clator+–+will+be+open+and+ready+by+Friday,+so+we+are+very+happy+to+announce+that+the+kids+will+enjoy+them+through+most+of+the+summer+can+enjoy,”+Herron+said.
Progress+is+also+being+made+on+the+installation+of+a+new+splash+pad+at+Heritage+Port.++Savage+Construction+is+also+currently+working+on+the+ARPA-funded+recreation+project+to+create+a+new+‘sprayground’+area+on+the+south+side+of+the+harbor+near+the+WesBanco+Arena.++That+$348,500+project+is+expected+to+be+completed+in+early+summer.
