Garage fire causes nearly $70,000 in damage in southeast Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A garage fire broke out in southeast Topeka on Friday, October 18, causing nearly $70,000 in damage.

Topeka Fire Department (TFD) firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at 1230 SE 28th St. just before 4 p.m. on Friday.

Upon arrival, fire brigades found smoke and flames coming from the garage connected to the house.

Firefighters began extinguishing the fire, keeping it within the structure where it originated.

As a result of the fire, the first floor of the house was damaged.

An initial and secondary search of the home revealed that all residents had left the building before fire crews arrived.

Initial information indicates that the causes of the fire are currently under investigation.

Estimated structural damage is approximately $69,000 and loss of contents is $2,000.

This fire included the initial response of three engine companies, two truck companies, one aviation company, two battalion chiefs, and one investigator.

No working smoke detectors were found in the house.

Agencies that assisted included the Topeka Police Department, Everrgy, Kansas Gas Service and American Medical Response.
