Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel rescued two people off the coast of Basilan Province during severe weather conditions, the PCG said on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Personnel from the Isabela Coast Guard Station rescued Junaid Maliki, 20, and Badad Maliki, 21, both residents of Lampinigan Island, Isabela City.
The PCG said the Malikis were rescued on the morning of Monday, October 21, in the waters off Lampinigan Island in the city of Isabela.
The two were found to be carrying 30 gallons of drinking water aboard the speedboat, which overturned and capsized when strong winds and large waves hit them.
They were rescued by a search and rescue team from the Isabela City Coast Guard Station, which responded with HSRB 027 after receiving a report of the incident.
The Coast Guard rescue team aboard HSRB 027 towed the speedboat to the shoreline of Barangay Riverside in Isabela City, and the rescued two were turned over to the Municipal Office of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for medical evaluation.
According to the state weather bureau, severe weather conditions in the region, including Basilan province, were caused by Tropical Kristine Depression.
Unfavorable weather conditions forced PCG to suspend the commercial ferry service from Isabela City in Basilan to Zamboanga City on Monday, October 21. (SunStar Zamboanga)
