In their latest update, they urged people to stay away from the scene while the search continues.

They said: “Officers remained at Dovestone Reservoir late this evening searching for a man who had gone into the water earlier in the afternoon.

“Specialist teams will carry out further assessments this morning as they continue the search using all appropriate resources available.

“We are asking people to avoid the area while this work is carried out and we thank the public for their continued patience.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 2.30pm yesterday (Sunday October 20), fire crews were called to Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham following reports of a person in the water.

“Two fire engines from Mossley and Stalybridge, an enhanced rescue unit from Leigh, a rescue unit from Eccles, an air unit and two drones, including an underwater drone from Lancashire Fire and Rescue, were called to the scene.

“The entrepreneur used a throwing rope and one victim was pulled from the water before the fire brigade arrived. A police helicopter, police, ambulance service and mountain rescue service also took part in the operation.

“The fire brigade operation lasted approximately four hours and forty minutes.”
