In 2024, the number of failed driving tests will increase, almost half of candidates will not pass the exam

According to information presented in parliament, almost half of all candidates failed the 2024 driving test.

Transport Minister Chris Bonnet presented the information to the House in response to a parliamentary question from opposition MP Mark Anthony Sammut.

Category B driving license exams, i.e. those authorizing to drive a passenger car, had a pass rate of 48%. This percentage has been increasing year on year since 2022, when 40% failed their driving test. 44% failed the exam in 2023.

Category D licenses, which are required for commercial vehicles, had the highest failure rate, with 56% of candidates failing the test. This represents a significant jump from 46% in 2023 and 39% in 2022.

Category A (motorcycle) driving licenses also had a higher number of failures, with 42% failing the test in 2024, compared to 40% in 2023 and 32% in 2022.

Category C, which includes trucks and large delivery vehicles, had the lowest failure rate – 38% in 2024, although this also increased from 33% in 2023 and 24% in 2022.
