Central Okanagan Hospice Seminar Empowers Youth to Navigate Grief

The Central Okanagan Hospice Society recently hosted a seminar designed to support grieving youth. The event, titled “Supporting Grieving Youth,” provided attendees with practical tools and resources to help them cope with the loss of a loved one. Over 50 individuals, including students, parents, and professionals, gathered at the hospice’s location in Kelowna. The seminar was led by experienced professionals in the field of grief counseling, who shared their insights on the unique challenges faced by grieving youth. Participants learned about the stages of grief, how to identify and express their emotions, and how to build resilience in the face of adversity. They also explored healthy coping mechanisms, such as journaling, art therapy, and spending time in nature. One of the key themes emphasized during the seminar was the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for grieving youth. Attendees were encouraged to listen without judgment, offer practical help, and provide a sense of belonging to young people who are struggling with loss. The seminar also addressed the specific needs of grieving LGBTQ+ youth and youth from diverse cultural backgrounds. Experts discussed the unique challenges faced by these populations and provided strategies for providing culturally sensitive support. “We know that grief can be particularly overwhelming for young people,” said Dr. Emily Bell, Executive Director of the Central Okanagan Hospice Society. “This seminar aimed to empower youth with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate their grief journey.” Participants praised the seminar for its informative and compassionate approach. “I found this seminar to be incredibly helpful,” said 16-year-old Sarah Williams. “It gave me a better understanding of what I’m going through and how to cope with losing my dad.” The Central Okanagan Hospice Society plans to continue offering support to grieving youth through a variety of programs and services.
