The Porter House Hotel, a landmark in Sydney’s CBD, has won high praise at the AIA Architecture Awards NSW 2024, winning both the Greenway Award for Heritage and the NSW Award for Commercial Architecture.
These awards recognise the building’s exceptional combination of heritage conservation and innovative commercial design, making it a standout project in Sydney’s architectural landscape.
The Porter House Hotel won the NSW Award for Commercial Architecture for its innovative design, which combines a heritage building with a modern architectural framework.
“The Porter House Hotel offers a visual highlight that stands out from every angle, despite its location in the heart of Sydney’s CBD,” the jury said.
“By incorporating the monumental Porter House into the design, it creates a dialogue between heritage and modernity. This dialogue takes place at different scales, from the interface to the tower.”
Candlepas Associations “showed a clever commercial insight and skillfully managed the interaction between different typologies.”
“Design thinking and commerciality are combined to enable the project to be delivered within a pragmatic and competitive landscape, while promoting heritage renewal and contributing to the changing quality of life in Sydney’s CBD.”
A key aspect of the design of The Porter House Hotel is that it invites the public to visit its premises.
“Thoughtful planning invites the public into the area, where ground-level activation contributes to and draws on the vitality of the city to enhance the overall experience of both,” the jury noted. “Expressive facades spark curiosity, evoking architectural heritage and nostalgia for an urban grace that seems almost lost.”

Regarding the award of the Greenway Award for Heritage, the jury stated that The Porter House Hotel “is a testament to conscientious heritage conservation and adaptive reuse.”
The building was originally completed in 1883 as a tobacco factory for ‘Dixson & Sons’. Over the years it has had various functions, including housing various businesses, before being converted into a modern hotel.
The Porter House building has now been given a new lease of life as the Porter House Hotel, a 122-room hotel, suites, private event and conference space, and hospitality venues.
“The existing timber structural frame has been faithfully exposed with sensitive, detailed additions,” the jury noted. “The reconstruction of the entry-level ground plane, the restoration of the original bare façade and the liberation of non-original canopies ensure clear legibility of the complete heritage item from the public domain.”
