Tripura’s ‘Save a Year’ Exam: Giving Students a Second ChanceTripura’s ‘Save a Year’ Exam: Giving Students a Second Chance In 2020, the Tripura government implemented the “save a year” examination, an initiative that provides a second chance for students who fail up to two subjects. This exam allows students to retake the test and move on to the next grade or gain admission to colleges. According to a Hindustan Times report, approximately 7,000 students from grades 10 and 12 are expected to take the examination by the end of July 2024. Of these, 1,385 and 2,042 are from grades 12 and 10, respectively. The Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) will announce the exam schedule within a week, with the tests set to take place in the last week of July. Students must submit their applications to their schools between July 8 and 11, while TBSE must receive the applications by July 12 and 15. The TBSE released the results for grades 10 and 12 on May 24, with pass rates of 87.54% and 79.27%, respectively. This effort reflects the government’s commitment to supporting students’ academic progress. School Merger Initiative Meanwhile, the Tripura government has also been identifying schools with less than 50 students for potential mergers with nearby institutions with higher enrollments. The aim is to improve the student-teacher ratio and enhance the overall learning experience. Once the identification process is complete, the government will evaluate the situation and consider merging these schools with others within a radius of 1 to 1.5 km. In 2020, the Tripura government introduced the ‘save a year’ examination, which favours students who fail a maximum of two subjects to move to the next class or to gain admission to colleges by retaking the examination. According to a Hindustan Times report, around 7,000 children in classes 10 and 12 are likely to appear for the examination this year by the end of July.
Of these, 1,385 students from class 12 and 2,042 from class 10 have applied to have their test papers evaluated. Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) secretary Dulal Dey was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying that the test schedule will be announced within a week, with the exams scheduled for the last week of July. Students have to submit their applications to their respective schools between July 8 and 11, and TBSE has to receive the application forms between July 12 and 15.
The TBSE announced the results of grades 10 and 12 on May 24, with pass rates of 87.54 percent and 79.27 percent, respectively. A total of 38,559 grade 10 students and 27,627 grade 12 students took the regular exam this year. The grade 12 exams were held from March 1 to 30, and the grade 10 exams from March 2 to 23.
The ‘save a year’ exam gives students a second chance to reach the minimum threshold of 150 points, which means they don’t lose an academic year by failing a few subjects. This effort shows the government’s commitment to helping students’ academic progress.
Meanwhile, the Tripura government was working on identifying schools with less than 50 students for possible mergers with nearby institutions with higher enrolments, an official had announced last month. District education officials have been tasked with identifying government schools with low student strength as part of a strategy to improve the learning system. The aim of this merger is to improve the student-teacher ratio to ensure more effective education.
Once the identification process is completed, the government will evaluate all factors and possibly merge these schools with other schools within a radius of 1 to 1.5 km.
