For the first time, the number of jobs added in June 2024 surpassed 450 compared to the same period in 2023. Oklahoma emerged as a leading state in the sector, ranking third with over 49,000 energy sector employees. Despite a broader economic context of rising unemployment rates, the energy sector’s growth is notable. In total, nearly a thousand jobs were added, bringing the national energy sector to 647,636 jobs across the country.

Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Workforce Council report found that employment growth in 2024 was nearly 450 jobs higher for the first time than in 2023.

Oklahoma has the third highest number of energy sector employees, at over 49,000.

Nationally, the U.S. economy added 206,000 jobs in June. However, the unemployment rate rose to 4.1%, the highest level since October 2021. The energy sector’s growth is particularly notable given the broader economic context of rising unemployment rates, suggesting a focused recovery in energy labor markets.
