The Death of a Celebrity at the Zoo
Winston, one of the world’s oldest male gorillas and a near-celebrity primate at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, died Saturday. He was 52.
The giant animal, affectionately nicknamed “Winston the Wonderful,” was a western lowland gorilla. He was euthanized Saturday, zoo officials said. According to an Instagram post from the safari park, Winston suffered from a number of age-related ailments, including heart, kidney and joint disease.

Visitors to the Southern California Zoo and Wildlife Alliance enjoyed seeing Winston and admired his gentle demeanor. Scientists cherished him for contributing to his critically endangered species and fathering nine offspring.
