Upon his arrival on campus, Riley has made a positive impression. Head coach Brad Underwood praises Riley’s high potential, stating that he is a “very, very talented offensive player” who can score from anywhere on the court. Riley, a 6’8″, 180-pound forward, is currently focused on gaining weight to enhance his physical presence on the court. He is expected to be a one-and-done prospect, meaning he is likely to pursue an NBA career after one year in college. Coach Underwood acknowledges that Riley’s tenure with the Illini is uncertain, as his NBA prospects could influence his decision-making. However, the team is eager to benefit from Riley’s skills while he remains on the roster. Riley’s versatility allows him to play both guard and small forward positions. He is known for his playmaking abilities, shooting prowess, and overall offensive contributions. Shandel Richardson, the publisher of Illinois Fighting Illini On SI, emphasizes Riley’s impact on the program and invites readers to follow the team’s updates on Facebook.
Guard Will Riley is the most important recruit in Illinois Fighting Illini basketball history in the past 20 years.
Riley has already been making an impression since arriving on campus earlier this month.
“He’s been great,” Antigua said. “I think he’s got a high ceiling, obviously. Time will tell. He’s got to keep working, like the rest of the guys.”
The 6-foot-8, 180-pound Riley has spent most of the summer trying to gain weight. The Illini want him to put on a few pounds before he can physically compete at the Division I level, particularly in the Big Ten. Riley is viewed by most as a one-and-done prospect, so he needs to speed up the physical process.
Antigua said he’s not sure how many years Riley will play for the Illini. He’s a top-20 national recruit, with some NBA scouting services projecting him as a first-round pick in 2025.
“We don’t dictate that,” Antigua said. “The staff doesn’t dictate that. Those GMs at the next level dictate that and there’s a lot of rumors and speculation.”
In the meantime, the Illini will enjoy Riley for however long he chooses to stay in college. He can play both backcourt and small forward.
“It was just a great matchup,” Illini coach Brad Underwood said. “I think in terms of what we were looking for, he’s a very, very talented offensive player. He’s a young man who can score at all three levels. I would say the definition of positionless is him. He’s shown that he can be an elite playmaker, shooter off the bounce, finisher.”
