IOWA CITY — Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert, who was seeking re-election this fall, has resigned from his position due to health reasons, the county announced Friday.

Weipert resigned in a letter to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Thursday and informed the deputy election commissioner that he will not seek re-election.

Weipert, a Democrat, has been county auditor since 2013 and ran unopposed in the June primary. The supervisors will appoint an interim for the remainder of his term.

The Auditor’s Office is responsible for administering local, state, and federal elections and maintaining the county’s voter registration. The Auditor’s Office also maintains property records for tax purposes and processes accounts payable and payroll for the county government.

“I am grateful to the people of Johnson County for the privilege of serving my community and I am incredibly proud of what my office and my incredible staff have done to improve voting access in Johnson County,” Weipert wrote. He did not specify the health reason that led to his resignation.

The vacancy will be filled by voters during the general election on November 5.

Vacancies for the general election due to withdrawal of candidates must be filled by the county convention of the party and filed with the commissioner of elections. The filing must be made no later than 5:00 p.m. on the 69th day before the election, or by the end of August this year.
