The evacuation order issued for the massive wildfire burning south of Cache Creek in British Columbia’s interior has been partially lifted.

The Shetland Creek fire, estimated to cover 22,476 hectares, has been burning since July 12 and has prompted multiple evacuation warnings and orders.

The leading edge of the fire is approximately 20 kilometres north of Cache Creek, but only 10 kilometres north of Ashcroft and four kilometres west of Spences Bridge.

On Thursday night, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District downgraded one of those orders to a warning, with the change taking effect at 8 a.m. Friday.

However, the regional district said only three of the 97 properties under the order were affected, while 94 properties remained under evacuation.

On Thursday, the TNRD lifted two evacuation warnings for 154 properties in and around the village of Ashcroft.

The Trans-Canada Highway is currently closed from Spences Bridge to nine kilometres south of Cache Creek.

The fire is considered out of control, but BC Wildfire reported Thursday that conditions were favorable for firefighting efforts. No increase in size was observed.

However, it warned that fire behaviour will increase on Friday, “and show an upward trend towards more warming and drying conditions.”

Environment Canada is forecasting sunny skies for the weekend, with highs of 27 to 30 C for the area. Some relief is expected for Monday and Tuesday, with clouds and a 30 to 40 percent chance of showers.

A total of 170 firefighters are fighting the fire, along with 12 helicopters, 34 pieces of heavy equipment and 48 people protecting the buildings.
